Being back open is music to our ears. We have implemented a new set of standards called Safe + Sound that is dedicated to providing a healthy and safe environment for our guests and team members. We will always go above and beyond to take deliberate, careful steps to ensure a rock ‘n’ roll experience for all.

Here are a few examples of what you will see when you find your way back;

Thermal Imaging. Guest and team member entrances are limited to allow our security team to conduct non-invasive temperature checks utilizing thermal imaging. In accordance with CDC guidelines, anyone displaying a temperature of 100.4 or more, displaying a cough, shortness of breath or other symptoms of COVID-19 will be discretely offered a secondary temporal temperature screening. Guests and team members with temperatures of 100.4 or more will not be permitted to enter the property.

Physical Distancing. Guests will be advised to practice proper social distancing from individuals and groups of people not traveling with them while standing in lines or moving around property. There will be signs and floor decals to assist with the guidelines set for social distancing at kiosks, cage/food and beverage counters, entrances and ATM’s.

Sanitation Stations. Hand sanitizer dispensers and sanitizer wipes have been placed throughout the property for guest and team member usage.

Guest and Team Member Health Concerns. Our team members have been given clear instruction on how to respond to and report guests or coworkers who are exhibiting signs of a cough, shortness of breath, or other known symptoms of COVID-19.

As states begin to ease restrictions, we have been observing other casinos as they reopen across the United States. We have also been surveying our Rock Star guests all in an effort to learn and establish new best practices to provide a safe environment for guests and team members to enjoy. We will continue to monitor the property and make changes to adapt to this new environment.

Initially, we will restrict the gaming floor to 50% occupancy as a safety measure following the guidelines of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. This restriction includes the slot floor as well as table games. This will allow guests to practice social distancing guidelines while on property.

Casino entrance’s will be limited to the main and east casino doors. The north entrance located near Main + Abbey will be open during Main + Abbey operating hours only.

All team members who work in direct guest-service areas will be wearing masks as part of their uniforms to protect themselves, our guests and their fellow team members. Masks are mandatory for anyone on the casino floor, but may be taken off to eat or drink while sitting at a table, booth or bar.

If you are considered high-risk or if you are experiencing any signs of illness, we ask you to please stay home until you are well.

If you’ve booked a room in Atlantic City, you are well aware that the price you see advertised is not the price you pay. Sometimes it’s not even close. Whether you’re redeeming a “comped” night that ends up costing $32 or booking two-night stay that balloons from a $300 advertised rate to more than $400 total, the fees and taxes are a frustrating element of booking rooms at casino hotels.

When you book at Borgata’s website, you get a clear breakdown of what you’re paying on top of the room rate.

In Atlantic City, the hotel tax rate is a whopping 13.625%, and New Jersey tacks on a $3 occupancy fee and a $2 “tourism promotion” fee every night you stay. All of that is before you get hit with the resort fee, which is the hotel’s way of giving you a bundle of amenities at one low pricekeeping the advertised price low while increasing their Average Daily Rate.

To make matters more confusing, the resort fee and $2 tourism promotion fee are subject to the state tax while the $3 occupancy fee is not, and hotels differ on whether or not those taxes are included in the listed resort fee. Digesting all of that?

In the interest of clearing this up, below is a list of resort fees at Atlantic City casino hotels. The “Effective Fee” is a combination of the resort fee, taxes on that fee, the $3 state occupancy fee, and the $2 state tourism promotion fee (and any taxes on that fee). More simply, it’s the difference between the advertised rate (plus tax) and what you actually end up paying per night.

December 2020 update: Golden Nugget’s resort fee went from $20 to $22, Resorts’ fee went from $22.08 to $31.40, and Tropicana is now owned by Caesars so they increased their fee from $24.59 to a much more Caesars-like $32.27.

It’s worth noting that these fees are waived for elite status holders in many of the casinos’ players clubs. Thanks to Darryl McEwen, creator of Seven Stars Insider, for providing much of the following info:

  • Bally’s, Caesars, and Harrah’s: Resort fee waived for Total Rewards Diamond and Seven Stars cardholders. You will typically still be charged the $5 in state fees if you book online or through 1-800-CAESARS, but you can sometimes get it waived by booking through a host.
  • Borgata: Only rooms booked through a host can get the resort fee waived, regardless of M life Rewards tier level. You can use comp dollars to pay the resort fee.
  • Hard Rock: Resort fee not waived at any tier level. You can use comp dollars to pay the resort fee.
  • Ocean: Resort fee and state fees waived for Ocean Premier Black cardholders.
  • Resorts: Resort fee waived for Star Card Red Carpet cardholders. It’s unclear if this includes the $5 occupancy/tourism fee. You can use comp dollars to pay the resort fee but not the occupancy/tourism fee.
  • Tropicana: Resort fee waived for Trop Advantage Black cardholders. It’s unclear if the $5 in state fees are also waived. You can use comp dollars to pay the resort fee and state fees.

So keep these fees in mind next time you go to book an AC hotel. And remember that it could be worse — MGM just announced a resort fee increase at several Vegas properties, bringing post-tax fees to more than $51.
